I have a worker who is generally uncooperative and resents my management. This is team destructive, what should I do ?

Thanks John, for your post. This must be one of the most frustrating situations that managers have to face!

Some people might feel its best to deal with this head on, and take a firm stance with an employee who acts like this.

My personal view is one of curiosity. What is making them act in this way? I suggest meeting this person on a one to one basis. Use probing questions to get a better understanding. At the same time, be very clear about the impact on the team and your business of his or her behavior.

I think it helps to stay focused on the "bigger picture" in your discussions. What are the consequences of this behavior continuing? At the same time, respect that this person has a right to their viewpoint. If you want to change their attitude, it may take time and call for patience and persistence on your part.

Has anyone else a suggestion or advice for John? I would love to hear it..
