3 Tips for making an impact in your new role

Hi Shirley

Congratulations on your promotion!
Your company recognises that you have the skills to make your role a success.. so firstly I would say, take advice, but trust your instincts!


If I was one of the 30-50 people you are now managing, what would I like to see?

Firstly, I want to see that you are confident, focused and have a clear long term plan for the future. That your approach challenges us to do more and will lead to better things for all concerned. I want to see that plan broken down into measureable targets, and I want to see what you expect from me in order to meet those targets. I also want to know the personal return I will get from my efforts - even if it is just basic job security.

Secondly, I want to see that that you don't surround yourself with "yes" people or favourites on the team. I want to feel that you are approachable. That I have an opportunity to contribute and be listened to, on a one to one basis and/or in some form of regular update/meeting. And if a suggestion is made, it is followed up.

Thirdly, I want to feel that you are not afraid to act decisively, when necessary. I understand that tough decisions are sometimes required, but as long as they are taken fairly and are properly explained, then you will win my respect.


So, Shirley, I hope those thoughts are some help!
