How to build motivation in difficult times

by:

Good leadership skills are particularly important when employees are anxious about their jobs and their future. Their morale can easily drop and a mood of despondency can descend like a thick fog.

At these times, they look to you for a way ahead. Despite how worried or anxious you may feel, it is important to stay calm, confident and forward thinking.

For example, engage your team in finding new ways to cope with a changed marketplace. Perhaps there are new product lines or markets that could be explored, or different ways of approaching customers, for example online. Potential costs savings may be possible, for example through better energy management. Set up project teams to investigate.

Your employees are a valuable resource in difficult times, and they will respond positively when kept in the loop.

Finally, make sure that you communicate clearly from the top. Be realistic but upbeat about the future. If you fail to communicate, then the "grapevine" may take over, with potentially damaging results.
